Power giants see new opportunities in China

29 October 2004

Robust economic growth has created a severe power shortage in China, resulting in the ordering of 144 new plants this year alone and creating new opportunities for foreign companies to enter the previously state-monopolised power sector. Among these are Siemens, which has sold nine GT sets for CHP plants in Henan and Xiaoshan, and Alstom, which has entered into an agreement with Dong Fang to co-operate in the preparation of a proposal to supply the turbine generator package for Phase II (2 X 1000 MW) of Ling Ao, a China Nuclear Power Engineering Co plant.

The two companies had already collaborated at Ling Ao in supplying the conventional islands for Phase I (2 X 1000 MW). Alstom is willing to support the Chinese self-reliance programme for nuclear power by partnering with Chinese industry and the local Electric Power Design Institutes, especially with its ARABELLE technology for half speed steam turbines of the 1500 MW Class used in nuclear power plants. It also intends to invest in a state-of-the-art welded rotor facility in China to serve the Chinese and world markets for nuclear and fossil steam turbines.

• Siemens PG has signed contracts worth about j210 million with four power plants in China, under which it will team up with Shanghai Electric (Group) Corp. to supply nine gas turbines to its combined-cycle plants with delivery slated for the second half of 2005. Siemens will provide two 350 MW turbines each to plants at Zhengzhou and Zhongyuan in Henan province in central China, and Xiaoshan in Zhejiang province, SE China, and three turbines, each with a capacity of 350 MW, are to be supplied to Shanghai Shidongkou power plant.

Siemens also plans to set up a joint venture with Shanghai Electric to make hot-gas-path components for its most advanced gas turbines.
