Projects seeking participants

Abu Dhabi ABB has won two contracts worth a total of $59 million from Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) to upgrade and expand power transmission and distribution.

The first contract includes the supply of 50 pre-engineered and self-contained 33/11kV distribution substations, which will speed up the delivery time. The package includes 386 medium-voltage switchgear panels and 20 transformers.

The second contract comprises the delivery of five 33/11kV distribution substations that incorporate the latest technology in control, protection and monitoring systems, 250 air- and gas-insulated switchgear panels, as well as 25 distribution transformers. The first units will be delivered in seven months, and the contracts finalised in 20 months.

Belgium Electrabel has issued requests for participation in three projects at Ruien power station. The three projects are: * Design, fabrication, installation and commissioning of a single wet process flue gas desulpherisation unit, together with all associated plant auxiliaries.

* Installation of SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) flue gas denitrification technology to three power generation units. Project includes all peripheral plant and ammonia storage and handling facilities.

* Renovation and upgrade of existing control system on three units. Installation of hardware and software for a 20,000 I/O signal interface. Project will include peripheral modules, networks, alarm management and supervision stations.

The deadline for receipt of tenders/requests for participation for all projects is 22 September 2003. Invitations to tender will be issued by 10 October to selected companies.

China Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) has won a contract to construct two 50MWe fluidised bed power plants in Henan province, China. Construction will start in December 2003, and is scheduled for completion by October 2005. Kepco said that it would manage and operate the power plants for 20 years, which will earn the company $3.3 million annually.

The construction of the power plants will cost $65 million, over which Kepco will provide $14 million, China will provide $6 million, and the rest will be borrowed.

Greece Heron Thermoelectric has issued a request for participation in a $435 million project to construct a single-shaft 360 - 400MWe combined cycle gas turbine power plant. The project will include the gas turbine, HRSG, steam turbine, condenser, HV and MV switchgear and all auxiliary plant and systems. Mott MacDonald has been appointed as owner's engineer. The deadline for the receipt of tenders/requests for participation is 20 December 2003.

Italy The Italian government has approved plans to construct 24 new build power plants adding over 11GWe of generating capacity. The projects will be fast tracked, however little new capacity is expected on stream before late 2006. The following plants are included: * Lombardy: 1,040MWe and 780MWe.

* Emilia Romagna: 789MWe and 800MWe.

* Puglia: 1,170MWe.

* Fruili Venezia: 800MWe.

* Calabria: 800MWe.

* Molise: 780MWe.

* Piedmont: 770MWe.

Mexico CECSA (Constructora el Cajon), a consortium consisting of Constructora Internacional de Infraestructura, Promotora Inversora Visa, Ingenieros Civiles Asociados, La Peninsular Compania Constructora, & Energomachexport Power Machines, has been awarded a $750 million contract by Comision Federal Electridad (CFE) to build a 750MWe hydroelectric power project at Tepic, Nayarit in Mexico. AMECO has been awarded the site services contract. The plant is due to begin commercial operation in August 2007.

Norway The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Administration (NVE) has announced that planning permission has been granted for a wind farm with a total installed capacity of 40MWe. The rating of the individual turbines has yet to be decided. Construction is not expected to commence until autumn 2005.

Portugal Iberdrola of Spain has presented studies to the Portuguese government for construction of an 800MWe combined cycle gas turbine at Coimbra. Approval of the project will depend on final profitability prospects and demand growth expectations as a result of the planned consolidated Iberian power market.

Saudi Arabia There are expansion projects at Asir, Bisha and Jizan power plants. Asir will receive a 60MWe upgrade, Bisha requires two extra 60MWe gas turbines, and Jizan requires an extra three 60MWe gas turbines. Proposals for the Asir project are required by 21 October, 2003; by 22 October 2003 for the Bisha project; and by 23 October 2003 for Jizan. Bidders are asked to submit proposals for one further turbine at each plant. Work on all three plants is expected to take no longer than 20 months.

Saudi Arabia The Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) plans to expand Riyadh 7. The $110 million contract will be for two 60MWe gas turbines. SEC plans to issue tender documentation by end of September 2003.

Thailand Rolls-Royce has won a $30 million contract to supply two Avon industrial gas turbines and one RB211 dry low emission (DLE) compressor package. The units were ordered by Samsung Engineering on behalf of the Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTT) to provide additional power for PTT's Mab Ta Phut, Rayong gas plant. The gas separation plant is being expanded by PTT and is scheduled for project start-up in November 2004. To meet this date, the Rolls-Royce equipment will be delivered at the end of 2003 and early 2004.

PTT will now operate three different Rolls-Royce gas turbine models available for use in the gas production industry - 501, Avon and RB211. There are currently nine units installed at Mab Ta Phut.

United Kingdom Scottish Hydro Electric has issued a request for participation for the design and construction of a 120km 400kV overhead transmission line in the north of Scotland between Beauty and Denny. The scope of project will include management, design of tower line, civil engineering, procurement, erection and construction. Deadline for the receipt of tenders is 23rd September 2003.

United Kingdom Peninsula Power is seeking planning permission for a £37 million 28MW biomass combined heat and power (CHP) plant using gasification and a gas turbine, to be built in Devon. The plant will provide 23MWe to the grid. An £11.5 million grant from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has been secured. The project is expected to start construction by the end of 2003, with completion in the summer of 2005. Integrated Development Projects, the parent company of Peninsula Power, is interested in receiving supply and fabrication proposals.

United Kingdom PowerGen UK is requesting tenders for participation for a flue gas desulpherisation (FGD) project at Kingsnorth power station on an EPC contract basis. The deadline for the receipt of tenders/requests for participation is 29 September, 2003, although pre-tender questionnaires should be returned by 22 September. Invitations to tender will be issued 3 November 2003.

United Kingdom PowerGen UK is requesting tenders for participation in a contract for the management and execution of various services, mostly involving the removal from site, repair and refurbishment and return and installation of turbine spindles and LP blades. More than one contract may be awarded with a rolling programme over a four-year period. The deadline for return of tenders/requests for participation is 23 September 2003. Invitations to selected candidates is scheduled for 3 October.
