Prokon selects Multibrid for Borkum West II

31 January 2008

German energy project developer Prokon Nord has selected Areva subsidiary Multibrid to supply the wind turbines for the Borkum West II offshore wind farm.

Under a contract worth over EUR 500 million, Multibrid will supply eighty 5 MW machines for installation in the North Sea, 45 km north of Borkum Island. The M5000 wind turbines will be delivered in 2010 and 2011.

Areva acquired a 51 per cent stake in Multibrid in October 2007 for EUR75 million, a move that reflects its growing interest in the renewable energy market. Earlier in January it announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Brazilian renewable energy company Koblitz.

The selection of Multibrid follows the announcement that Trianel, an association of German electric utilities, will join forces with Prokon Nord to invest EUR1 billion in the 400 MW wind farm.
