Some 2200 villages not yet connected to Romania's grid should have electricity by 2016, with most of the funding coming from the state budget, according to a statement from the country’s Economy ministry. It will cost the state around EUR 2400 for each individual house connection, says the ministry, amounting to some EUR 230 million to connect all the remaining vilages.
Previous governments had promised that they would bring electricity to these villages to electricity, first by 2009, at a cost of EUR 150 million, then by 2012. The delays appear to have been caused by a failure to raise enough finance from the private companies operating energy distribution networks in Romania.
