Russia's nuclear new build programme to slow down

3 August 2009

In the coming years the rate of nuclear power plant construction in Russia will be reduced from two to one reactor a year, according to director general of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation Sergey Kiriyenko, speaking during a July meeting of the Committee on Modernisation and Technological Development of Economy in Sarov.

‘We are implementing this programme in compliance with our task. The task has not been changed and we will have to build all the 26 reactors stipulated by the programme. But, now, in the face of crisis and declining energy demand, we have decided to put off the peak of the programme for several years. We were planning to build two reactors a year but now we have revised the programme: in the coming years we will build one reactor a year’ Kiriyenko said. ‘As soon as the economy revives, we will start building two reactors a year.’
