Russia to help with nukes

5 April 2002

Ukraine state utility Energoatom will sign a loan agreement with the Russian government in July to help fund completion of the Khmelnitski-2 and Rovno-4 nuclear power plants. Russia is proposing to supply Ukraine with $150 million worth of equipment, and this amount has been set aside in the Russian state budget.

The EBRD may also come back into the picture after last year postponing indefinitely a loan of $215 million when the Ukraine government refused to increase electricity tariffs. In February a Ukrainian working group held talks with EBRD officials at which it was claimed some common ground was found.
