RWE places Gwynt y Môr cable order

RWE Innogy says that it now secured the key components for a major new offshore wind farm in the UK and is on schedule to start construction next year.

The UK-based renewable energy firm has signed a contract with Nkt Cables GmbH for the manufacture and delivery of high-voltage sea cables for the Gwynt y Môr wind farm off the coast of North Wales. It has already secured contracts for the supply of turbines and substations for the project, which is due to start operating in 2013.

Gwynt y Môr is the third wind farm to be developed by RWE Innogy off the coast of North Wales. Nkt Cables will produce around 83 km of offshore cable for the project and will begin manufacturing at the end of 2011.

“We're well on schedule with preparations for the construction of our third offshore wind farm off the coast of North Wales,” said Paul Coffey, chief operating officer at RWE Innogy. “With contracts in place for the supply of turbines, substations and offshore export cabling, we have now secured the key project components to enable us to begin with offshore construction as planned in the autumn of next year.”

In total, Nkt Cables will produce four 132 kV high-voltage offshore cables, which will transmit the energy produced by the 576 MW wind farm across 20 km of seabed to land. Each of the cables is 20 cm thick and protected from the sea environment with robust armouring.

Construction of the transformer substation on land has already started, says RWE Innogy.

RWE Innogy is already operating the 60 MW North Hoyle and 90 MW Rhyl Flats wind farms off the coast of North Wales.
