RWE is getting ready to go ahead with the construction of a 775 MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in Turkey in 2010. The German energy company and its joint venture partner Turcas have signed the construction agreement for the planned plant, to be located in Denizli, western Turkey.
The plant will make a “decisive contribution” towards energy security in Turkey, according to RWE.
RWE holds a 70 per cent share in the joint venture company that is developing the Denizli project, which is scheduled for commissioning at the end of 2012. Greek firm Metka will build the plant, with major equipment such as the gas and steam turbines being supplied by Siemens.
Turkey is an important growth market for RWE due to its high rate of energy demand growth and the need for modernization in the power sector.
“The state-of-the-art combined cycle gas turbine plant with an efficiency rate of more than 55 per cent will make an decisive contribution towards securing supply in Turkey,” said RWE’s Chief Strategic Officer Leonhard Birnbaum. “The Turkish market is attractive and we wish to carry out a few more projects in order to participate in the growth opportunities the country offers.”
RWE says that it will “probably make the final investment decision” for the planned plant in the first quarter of 2010, once the building permission has been granted.
