Saft to supply to NYC smart grid project

24 February 2012

Saft is to play a key role in a major smart grid demonstration project in the USA after being chosen by Green Charge Networks (GCN) to supply energy storage systems.

The French battery technology company is to supply energy storage systems with a total capacity of close to 1 MWh that will support GCN’s role in the $92 million New York city-based project.

GCN’s scope of work includes the installation and operation of a network of smart storage and generation units (SSGUs) in the New York distribution grid. Saft will supply its Synerion 24M high-energy lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries and installation will start in March 2012.

The SGGUs will communicate directly with utility Con Edison, which initiated the demonstration project in 2010 with support from the US Department of Energy.

The demonstration project will identify, develop and test new technologies that could lead to a smarter, more efficient electricity grid as well as support the integration of electric vehicles.

The SGGUs will be installed in locations such as convenience stores, car rental locations, hotels and parking garages all over New York city.
