San Buenaventura project reaches financial close

13 January 2016

Construction of a 455 MW coal-fired power plant in the Philippines is set to start after the project's sponsors achieved financial close.

The San Buenaventura power plant is being developed by Meralco PowerGen Corp and Thailand's EGCO Group and will expand an existing power plant at the site in Mauban, Quezon Province. The plant will be one of the first facilities in the Philippines to use supercritical boiler technology.

A ceremony marking the official start of construction was held in December 2015. San Buenaventura Power Co. Ltd., a joint venture between EGCO and Meralco, has signed a project loan agreement with a group of Philippine commercial banks.

The power plant is due to start commercial operations in 2019.
