International Power has achieved a major milestone with the commercial operation of a new power and water desalination plant in the Middle East.
The UK-based firm, which is 70 per cent owned by GDF Suez of France, has announced that the Shuweihat S2 plant in Abu Dhabi has achieved full commercial operations. It now has five power and water desalination plants in operation in the United Arab Emirates.
Shuweihat S2 is 20 per cent owned by International Power subsidiary IPR-GDF Suez Middle East, Turkey and Africa (META) and 54 per cent by Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA). The remaining 26 per cent is owned by the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (6 per cent), Marubeni Corporation (10 per cent) and Osaka Gas (10 per cent).
The plant is capable of producing 1510 MW of electricity and 100 MIGD of water. It sells its output to the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Company (ADWEC) under a 25-year power and water purchase agreement.
Construction of Shuweihat S2 began in December 2008 by a consortium of Siemens, Samsung C&T Corporation and Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction Company.
