The first Siemens 6MW turbine has been successfully erected at the Westermost Rough offshore wind farm - the first commercial-scale project that will use the technology.
"This is the first time we have installed the Siemens 6 MW turbine with a 154 m diameter rotor on a commercial scale following smaller demonstration projects, and it represents a step change in our ability to provide more energy output from fewer turbines," said Duncan Clark, Westermost Rough Programme Director at Dong Energy.
Dong is developing the 210 MW Westermost Rough wind farm in partnership with Marubeni Corporation (25%) and the UK Green Investment Bank (25%). Thirty five Siemens 6 MW turbines are to be installed there, with full commissioning expected in the first half of 2015.
In July, Siemens obtained type certification by certifying body DNV GL for its D6 offshore wind turbine. This type certification for the SWT-6.0-154 includes a 25 year design lifetime, five years longer than the previous turbine lifetime that Siemens has designed towards.
