Siemens awarded turbine upgrade contract by FPL

3 December 2008

Siemens Energy has entered into a contract with from Florida Power & Light Company to upgrade the turbine-generators in its St Lucie and Turkey Point nuclear power plants. The orders, worth $250 million, include the supply of equipment and some installation services.

Both St Lucie and Turkey Point are two-unit pressurised water reactors, with net generating capacities per unit of 839MWe and 693MWe respectively. The planned upgrades are expected to increase these by 100 MWe at each unit.

The St Lucie plant will be supplied with a new high-pressure turbine, two new low-pressure turbines, and complete modernisation of the generator, including a Rigi-Flex rewind of the stator, generator rotor rewind and refurbished exciters.

For the Turkey Point plant, Siemens will supply a new HP turbine and undertake complete modernisation of the generator, including, as with St Lucie, a Rigi-Flex rewind of the stator, new generator rotors and refurbished exciters.

Earlier this year, Siemens was awarded a similar contract to upgrade FPL Energy’s two-unit Point Beach plant near Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
