Siemens will supply 150 of its 4MW offshore turbines for the 600MW Gemini project off the Dutch coast

Siemens has secured an €1.5 billion order to supply 150 wind turbines for the 600 MW Gemini offshore wind project in Dutch waters.

As per the order, Siemens will supply its 4 MW turbines each with a rotor diameter of 130 meters. The scope also includes a 15-year service and maintenance agreement for the Gemini project, which is Siemens Energy Service's largest service order to date.

Siemens says that for the first time, a helicopter will be available for a project at all times and a specially designed, purpose-built service operation vessel (SOV) will be based at the wind farm.

The Gemini project is to be located in the North Sea, 85 km above the coast of Groningen. Project developers include Canadian independent power producer, Northland Power Inc (60%), Siemens Financial Services (20%), Van Oord (10%) and HVC (10%), a joint venture of 48 Dutch municipalities and six water regulatory authorities.

Siemens said that Financial Services contributed to securing the Siemens bid by participating in the Gemini consortium via an almost EUR 500 million equity investment.

"The order is Siemens' first for an offshore wind project in Dutch waters."

"With the project we are entering one of the most important emerging offshore wind markets in Europe," said Markus Tacke, CEO of the Wind Power Division of Siemens Energy. The order is Siemens' first for an offshore wind project in Dutch waters.

Matthias Haag, CEO of Gemini, said that with project financing and all building and supply contracts now in place, the project focus has already shifted to the construction phase.

Gemini wind project is due to begin construction in 2015 and is expected to become fully operationally in 2017. Once commissioned the wind farm will supply one and a half million of Dutch citizens with clean energy.
