Siemens to build France's largest combined cycle power plant

27 September 2007

Siemens Power Generation has signed a contract worth EUR360 million with Endesa France to construct an 860 MW combined cycle power plant in Saint Avold, France. The plant will be the largest combined cycle plant in France and will start commercial operation in early 2010.

The gas fired plant will feature two SGT5-4000F gas turbines as well as Siemens' SPPA-T3000 instrumentation and control system. Siemens will build the plant on a turnkey basis at the site of the existing Emile Huchet power plant in the Lorraine region, 20 km west of the French-German border.

The construction of the power plant will boost Endesa France's existing installed capacity by 30 per cent. The company, which is 65 per cent owned by Spanish utility Endesa, is investing around EUR470 million in the project.

The two CCGT units will be the first to be built by Endesa in France, and fall under the framework of Endesa France's Industrial Plan, which aims to develop 2000 MW of additional capacity in France.

Siemens will build the two new units with CMI (Cockerill Maintenance & Ingénierie), a company specializing in waste heat boilers. Siemens scope of supply includes the gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, mechanical equipment, and electrical systems and equipment.

"Saint-Avold is our second order this year for the construction of a new, turnkey combined cycle power plant in France," said Klaus Voges, Group President of Siemens Power Generation. "With this order we have made a breakthrough in this important power plant market."

To ensure gas supply to the plants, a 36 km gas pipeline will be built to connect the plant to the main pipeline.

Endesa also plans to build a 430 MW CCGT plant at the Hornaig plant site in northern France.
