Siemens to build privately owned HVDC system in India

7 May 2009

Private power company Adani Power Limited (APL) has awarded Siemens Energy a EUR210 million contract to install a 960 km HVDC transmission system in India.

The 2500 MW HVDC system will transmit electricity from a planned new coal-fired power plant in the port city of Mundra on India’s west coast to the Haryana industrial region and other industrial load centres near New Delhi. Operation is scheduled to start in early 2011.

Under the contracts, Siemens will design the entire HVDC link and supply core components. The 960 km link will be the third HVDC system installed by the German firm in India, where rising electricity demand and the construction of large, centralised power plants is driving demand for efficient, high voltage transmission technologies.

APL will operate the HVDC system as well as the Mundra power plant in Gujurat state. The Ahmedabad-based company is a major importer of coal as well as India’s largest private energy trader.
