Siemens to supply advanced I&C system for Spanish power plant

23 March 2007

Siemens Power Generation (PG) will modernize the I&C system in the Puente Nuevo coal-fired power plant in Spain. The plant is owned by Enel Viesgo, a subsidiary of the Italian Enel SpA. SPPA-T3000, the world's first fourth-generation I&C system, will be installed for the first time in a Spanish power plant. After commissioning in early 2008, the plant's NOx and SOx emissions are expected to be reduced significantly.

The Puente Nuevo power plant with an installed capacity of 312 MW is located in Espiel in Córdoba Province and has been feeding power into the northern Spanish grid for 40 years. Siemens PG will replace the old I&C system with the new SPPA-T3000.

The new I&C system covers all functions for open- and closed-loop control of all power plant processes. As the first genuine web-based fourth-generation system it realizes seamless integration into existing IT environments. The system is capable of providing real-time information to a highly diverse range of users. With its unique Embedded Component Services technology it simultaneously simplifies system operation and maintenance. Its lean system architecture sustainably reduces plant life-cycle costs. SPPA-T3000 will play a major role in enhancing the availability and extending the service life of the power plant.

In addition to the I&C system, the plant modernization will also include the installation of a desulphurization plant and new burners to reduce NOx/SOx emissions.

Project execution has already begun. In order to minimize changeout time, commissioning will start before the scheduled plant outage in 2008.
