Chinese engineering firm Sinohydro has awarded Alstom a €20 million contract to provide engineering equipment to a major new hydropower plant in Zambia.
The Itezhi-Tezhi hydropower station will be built on the Kafue River and is due to be completed in 2015. Alstom will supply two 60 MW Kaplan turbine-generator units, the main inlet valve, and governing and exciting system.
The 120 MW plat will make an essential contribution to the electricity system in Zambia, where demand is rising due to the expansion of the country’s copper mining industry.
Alstom will be responsible for supervising site installation and commissioning. Sinohydro is the main engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project, which is owned by a joint venture of Tata and the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation.
