Canadian engineering company SNC-Lavalin says it will be able to expand its activities in the Middle East’s transmission and distribution sector after it won the consultancy contract forthe proposed high voltage direct current (HVDC) electricity interconnection between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
The US$3.9 million contract includes selection of the route for the 1500 km link, system and design studies as well as preparation of the request for proposals for the HVDC stations and lines in both countries. The two-pole, 500 kV multi-terminal link will enable the transfer of up to 3000 MW of power.
“We are very excited about expanding our existing transmission and distribution presence and activities in the Middle East with this new interconnection project,” said Patrick Lamarre, Executive Vice-President, SNC-Lavalin Group Inc.
SNC-Lavalin T&D is currently completing a similar project for the GCC Interconnection Authority, connecting Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is also carrying out studies and engineering and supervision mandates for 66 kV, 132 kV and 220 kV substations in Bahrain and UAE.
