South Africa awards wind, solar concessions

27 May 2012

The South African Department of Energy has awarded concessions for wind and solar energy projects to international developers in its second round of renewable energy tenders.

The DOE has awarded an 88 MW photovoltaic (PV) project to a consortium led by US company Solar Reserve, and five wind energy projects with a combined capacity of 297 MW to Vestas.

In each case the developers have been awarded ‘preferred bidder’ status and have six months to reach financial close and finalise contracts.

Solar Reserve, together with partners Kensani Group and Intikon Energy, were awarded the Jasper solar energy project in Northern Cape province. The consortium in 2011 was awarded preferred bidder status for two 75 MW PV projects in the DOE’s first tender round.

Last year Vestas won preferred supplier status for two wind energy projects in South Africa and will therefore supply wind turbines for 435 MW of wind energy capacity in the country.

Under the latest award, Vestas will supply turbines for the 94 MW West Coast 1 project, the 95 MW SA Tsitsikamma project, the 25 MW Grahamstown project, the 61.5 MW Grassridge project and the 21 MW Chaba project. The latter three are being developed by EDF EN of France, while GDF Suez is developing West Coast 1 and Cennergi the SA Tsitsikamma project.
