Spain to cut nuclear generation to 16.5% by 2011

4 July 2005

The socialist government of Spain has announced plans to reduce the role of nuclear power in the national generation mix by around 10% to 16.5% by 2011.

Nuclear power contributed more than 26% of total production in the first six months of this year and more than 31% over the same period last year.

The socialist president, Jose Luis Zapatero, pledged to phase out nuclear power in last year’s election campaign.

However, despite the claims, many doubt the government will be able to close down reactors and meet commitments under the Kyoto Protocol.
