Spain to face nuclear waste management costs

1 February 2005

The Spanish ministry of industry is to force nuclear plant owners to contribute cash towards the disposal of the nuclear waste generated from their plants. From the beginning of April, nuclear generators will have to pay 75% of the annual euro 120 million funding that is paid out to Enresa, the Spanish public company responsible for radioactive waste management and the decommissioning of nuclear power plants. Previously, Enresa had been funded by a 0.715% levy included in consumer electricity bills. This levy will now be cut to 0.173%.
