The European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) has released a report suggesting that wind will exceed the contribution of both coal and hydroelectricity in the national energy mix within the decade.
Spanish wind is on a roll, says the EWEA, from just over 200 MW in 1997, the Spanish market has been growing at annual rates of more than 30% and last year installed 2,065 MW taking the total to 8,263 MW, and leading the world after just pushing ahead of the previous leader Germany.
As a result, the previous target of 13 GW of wind by 2010 has been increased to 20 GW by 2011, a position that will see wind supply 15% of capacity, up from 6.5% currently.
However, the EWEA does concede that a move towards 15% will require a strategic grid framework.
