Sri Lanka to press ahead with power sector reforms

22 July 2005

Reforms of the Sri Lankan power sector are set to go ahead after the cabinet approved a restructuring plan for Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).

The move will see CEB unbundled into generation and distribution units but the government has stressed that the move is not part of a long-term privatisation plan. The CEB will instead be separated into four or more entities in a bid to help it lessen its heavy debt burden and improve its management.
