The Indian Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources (MNES) is urging state-controlled organizations to build captive power plants utilizing renewable energy sources.
The total installed capacity in India that is based on renewable sources is approximately 1350 MWe, MNES said. However, the growth of the renewable sector has slowed recently, partly as a result of poor planning and partly because the potential power plant developers cannot secure power purchase agreements with State Electricity Boards.
The wind power potential in India, based on the results of a recent study, is estimated to be 45 000 MWe. Around 9000 MWe of this is already capable of being exploited. MNES wants state companies to develop the wind potential further.
