30 January 2015

Sumitomo Corporation has placed an order with Babcock & Wilcox for the design and manufacture of a supercritical coal-fired boiler and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for the Duyen Hai 3 extension power plant in Vietnam.

Sumitomo is building the 688 MW power plant for Power Generation Corporation 1, a subsidiary of Electricity Vientam (EVN). Construction of the plant, located in Dan Thanh commune, Tra Vinh province, started in late 2014.

The Duyen Hai 3 extension power plant will play an important part in boosting electricity supplies in southern Vietnam and is expected to start operating in the second quarter of 2018.

Sumitomo signed the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract, valued at $891.6 million, for the project in November 2014. The contract also includes the construction of a port for the import of coal for the plant.
