The government of Sweden has announced plans to install 2000 wind turbines over the next ten years in order to boost its renewable energy output.
The goal is to increase electricity production from renewables by 25 TWh by 2020 – equivalent to around half of the current annual output of the country’s nuclear fleet.
Nuclear power currently accounts for around half of Sweden’s electricity production. The government last year announced plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent from 1990 levels and for renewable energy to account for half of energy needs by 2020.
The expansion of renewable energy will supported by applying new quotas in the electricity certificate system.
