Lawmakers in Western Australia have called for a full safety audit of the Muja coal-fired power plant after part of a wall on one of its cooling towers collapsed.
According to Synergy the wall collapsed on 9 November during an outage forced by a labour dispute at the nearby Griffin coal mine. The state-owned energy provider is investigating the incident but says that power supplies in the state would not be affected over the summer.
The 227 MW Muja D unit affected is one of four units at the power plant, located 225 km southeast of Perth. Western Australia's Labour party has called for a full safety audit of the Muja plant to rule out further major structural issues as well as the possible risk of Legionnaires' Disease.
According to Synergy no workers were in the vicinity when the cooling tower wall collapsed and there were no injuries.
