Poland's second-largest utility, Tauron, intends to convert its coal-fired power plant in Tychy to biomass firing, and has taken out a zl.30 million loan to help it finance the project.
The total cost of the investment will amount to zl.120 million. Tauron received the loan from the Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.
The investment will be carried out in two stages. First, the plant's boiler will have to be adapted to biomass burning. After that, new infrastructure will be added to the plant. Although the project will not be finalised before the end of 2015, the new boiler is due to be up and running some time next year.
Tauron has contracted Finland-based technology corporation Metso Power Oy to carry out the conversion.
“The reconstruction of the production facilities at the Tychy power plant stems from the need to adapt this source to meet the new emissions standards which will come into force at the beginning of 2016,” Joanna Schmid, vice-chairman of the management at Tauron Polska Energia in an official statement. “Maintaining current structures wouldn't allow us to meet the new requirements”.
