The $1.5 billion project, the Panhandle Loop, will allow transmission of 4,200 MW of wind capacity to be developed in the Texas Panhandle Plains region by Airtricity.
The three 345 kV interconnected transmission lines extending from three separate loops on the grid will enable the entire state to benefit from the capacity, Airtricity says, with the company’s chief executive, Eddie O’Connor, adding that it is to be built by late 2010.
The loop will result in the investment of over $10 billion in new generating capacity, including 2,000 MW of gas-fired power and 1,800 MW of coal-fired, Airtricity says.
