With the co-operation of the Icelandic transport system and funding from the EU, oil major Shell has opened the world's first roadside hydrogen filling station, in Rekjavik. Initially it will only have three customer vehicles, all Daimler/Chrysler hydrogen powered 'buses joining the fleet August for a two year period.
The country's objective is to lead the world in the use of this kind of technology. "In time, what is happening in Iceland will show the rest of the world that hydrogen fuel is a real commercial possibility that will lead to a cleaner, pollution free environment" said industry minister Valgerdir Sverrisdottir.
The EU has granted r2.8million of the r7 million project.
