The Zayed Future Energy Prize is inviting submissions for the 2013 award before the deadline of July 16, 2012, for an opportunity to be awarded part of a US$4 million fund.

The following categories and prize funds are now open for submissions:

• For large corporations – the: Recognition award (no monetary value)
• For mall and medium sized enterprises (SME) – $1.5 million
* For Non-Governmental Organisations – $1.5 million
* For the Lifetime Achievement Award – $500,000.

2012 also sees the addition of the Global High School Prize of $500,000 to be divided amongst 5 regions (Africa, Asia, Americas, Oceania, and Europe) with each school awarded up to US$100,000. The prize forms part of the UAE’s commitment to the UN Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative. High schools are asked to submit possible projects that incorporate one or more of the pillars of the initiative in categories including renewable energy, energy access and energy efficiency.

The selection committee will be evaluating entrants on the basis of four criteria, namely impact, innovation, long-term vision, and leadership.

Last year’s award attracted 425 applications from 71 countries. The Prize recognised Schneider Electric in the Large Corporations category, whilst the prize total of US$3.5 million was awarded to Professor Ashok Gadgil in the prestigious Lifetime Achievement category (US$500 000) and the Carbon Development Project (US$1.5 million) as the winner in the SME & NGO category. The first runner-up for the SME/NGO category, Orb Energy, was awarded US$1 million, while the second runner-up, the Environmental Defence Fund, was awarded US$500 000.

The Zayed Future Energy Prize, launched in 2008, represents the vision of the late President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, who championed environmental stewardship as an integral part of UAE history and heritage.
