Three Gorges third phase schedule announced

The China Three Gorges Project Corp (CTGPC) has announced the schedule of the third phase of the Three Gorges Project on the Yangtze river.

According to the schedule, the Three Gorges Project reservoir will go into service in 2006 and after the high-water season of 2006, the water level of the reservoir will be raised to 156 m from the current 135 m.

The 12 generators on the right bank of the dam are due to be completed by the end of 2008, a year ahead of the original schedule.

The two 50 MW plants supplying power to the project itself are due to become operational next March, also significantly ahead of schedule. Construction of the ship lifts is due to begin as part of the third phase of the project.
