Toshiba International Corp, a US-based subsidiary of the Japanese company Toshiba, has installed a fuel cell power unit in order to supply power for its critical operations such as telephony and its computer networks.
The company installed the fuel cell unit in May as its primary energy source in its Texas facility. In addition to using the unit to power computers, telephones and security systems, it is also employed to cool the plant.
The unit was supplied by ONSI Corp, a joint venture between the US company International Fuel Cells Corp and Toshiba.
Toshiba made the inverter for the Texas power unit. Toshiba markets ONSI's fuel cell technology in Asia, while ONSI handles US and European markets. A 200 kWe unit currently costs around $500 000.
