Transmission report on European interconnections

8 February 2005

The European association of the electricity industry, Eurelectric, and Europe’s association of transmission system operators, UCTE, have published a joint report setting out the current state of progress in interconnecting the European grid with those of the CIS and the Mediterranean basin. Looking specifically at current projects underway in the regions, the report says that while security of supply played an important role in such developments, recent drivers include the ongoing liberalisation process which calls for further reinforcement of the network, especially in terms of cross-border transmission capacity, possible expansion of the current UCTE synchronous area eastwards and southwards and the large-scale development of renewable energy.
