Trianel wind farm halfway to completion

21 February 2014

Areva has installed 20 of the contracted 40 wind turbines at the Trianel wind park Borkum. It is the first phase of the Borkum West II site, located north of Borkum island in the German North Sea.

The wind farm, which uses Areva's 5 MW-class M5000 wind turbine technology, will produce its first MWh of wind power in 2014, Areva says. The facility started construction in September 2013.

"This new milestone offers Areva an advantage which will be particularly profitable for the French offshore wind tender where Areva has been selected as turbine supplier by the GDF-SUEZ/EDPR/Neoen Marine consortium," commented Louis-François Durret, CEO of Areva Renewables.

The Trianel wind farm is being built over an area of 56 square kilometres. It is located around 45 km off the German coast and is close to the Alpha Ventus site, where the first M5000 turbines were installed in 2009
