Turkey invites nuclear bids

14 April 2008

The Turkish government has officially invited bids for the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant, according to local news sources. The country’s energy minister has hailed the move as the start of a very important and positive process for Turkey.

Canada’s AECL and France’s Suez are reported to be among those companies interested in placing a bid to construct 4000 MW of nuclear capacity at Akkuyu in the southern province of Mersin. The deadline for placing bids is September 24th 2008.

Electricity from the planned power plant will be purchased by the state-owned Turkish Electricity Trading and Contracting Company (TETAS).
