TÜV SÜD to conduct wide area plant assessment in India

2 December 2014

Indian energy provider MP Power Generation Company Ltd (MPPGENCO) has commissioned the technical services company TÜV SÜD to carry out extensive assessment of a thermal power station in the federal state of Madhya Pradesh. The contract is part of a comprehensive project initiated by the Indian Central Electricity Agency (CEA) in 2013 for the renovation and modernisation of thermal power stations. Within the scope of this project, over 50 conventional power stations will be fundamentally renovated and modernised by 2016 alone.

TÜV SÜD will inspect the national power supplier's conventional power station Sanjay Gandhi in in Birsinghpur in Madhya Pradesh over the next months. The main objective of the contract is to survey the plant's condition and performance and determine the remaining service life of the power-station components. TÜV SÜD will then summarise their results in Detailed Project Reports (DPR), which will form the basis for planning and implementation of the required renovation measures. Through its renovation and modernisation programme, the Indian government has set a course for closing the growing gap between energy demand and energy production and fulfilling its ambitious climate targets.

The 11th and 12th five-year plans provide for the rehabilitation of 129 plants with a total capacity of 26 238 MW and 95 plants with a total capacity of 21 212 MW respectively. "By calling in third-party consultants, the Indian government aims to ensure legal compliance, bring Indian power stations up to efficiency levels comparable to those in other countries, and achieve its ambitious climate targets", commented Bratin Roy, TÜV SÜD South Asia.

TÜV SÜD has been listed as a consultancy firm with the Indian Central Electricity Authority (CEA) since 2013. It employs international teams of multi-disciplinary experts to support power station operators and energy suppliers in India and in the implementation of this project power plant professionals from Europe will complement and reinforce a team of experts from India.
