The prime ministers of India and the UK have unveiled plans to develop and fund a research and development centre for solar energy technology.

The plans were announced during a UK trade visit to India, during which Teresa May and Narendra Modi established bilateral strategies on a range of economic, defence, security and technology issues.

The two leaders have pledged a joint investment of £10 million for the launch of an India-UK Clean Energy R&D Centre. The bilateral agreement also included plans for an India-UK Energy Summit in early 2017.

The R&D Centre will focus on solar energy storage and integration and will also establish a collaborative R&D programme on energy efficient building materials, according to a joint statement. The UK has also signalled its intention to joint the International Solar Alliance, an initiative spearheaded by India to accelerate the development and deployment of solar energy.

May and Modi also announced a fourth phase of the joint UK-India Civil Nuclear Research Programme, which will look at new technologies that contribute to enhancing nuclear safety, advanced materials for nuclear systems, waste management, and future civil nuclear energy systems.
