Vestas is set to add 90 MW of renewable energy capacity to Ukraine’s power grid after winning an order from the DTEK Group for 30 wind turbines. The Danish firm is to install and commission its V112-3.0 3MW WTGs in the coastal area of the Zaporozhye region. It says that the Ukraine is a promising wind energy market. The order from DTEK also includes a VestasOnline SCADA system. The two companies are negotiating a service agreement.
DTEK is Ukraine’s largest privately owned and vertically integrated energy utility. In 2008 it founded a subsidiary known as Wind Power to develop, build and operate wind farms in Ukraine.
The development of renewable energy is an important part of the Ukrainian government’s strategy to diversify away from natural gas and reduce the country’s dependence on Russia for energy. The government has put in place incentives to encourage the development of the renewable energy sector but projects have been slow to emerge.
In November 2011 Vestas announced its first sale in Ukraine – one V112-3.0 turbine for the Novorossiske project being developed by Vindkraft Ukraina.
