Algeria

Alstom has won a r1.4 million contract from SNC Lavalin to supply an Alstom Alspa P320 decentralised control system (DCS) for its 880 MWe Skikda combined cycle power plant in Algeria. Most of the major plant equipment is already supplied by Alstom and fitted with the Alspa P320 line of controls and protections.

China

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has won a contract from Chongqing Yuanda Environmental Protection Group in Chongqing province for the basic design and supply of major components of two large-scale flue gas desulpherisation (FGD) systems to be installed at the Guixi power plant in Jiangxi province.

At the Guixi plant, units 5 and 6 are currently under construction with a scheduled start up date of October 2005. The two 300 MWe units will have FGD systems with a total value of $30 million capable of treating 2272000 m3/hr of flue gas with 95% desulpherisation efficiency.

MHI will be in charge of basic system design, and supply of the key equipment, including absorber internals and agitators. SO2 absorption will be achieved using MHI’s Double Contact Flow Scrubber technology. Construction of the FGD system is due to start in November 2004.

The project is fully financed from Chinese capital.

Ireland

• Aghada combined cycle gas turbine

ESB Ireland is planning to construct a £275 million 400 MWe combined cycle gas turbine plant at the existing Aghada site, and hopes to receive tenders shortly. The following are expecting to be bidding: Siemens; Alstom; and a partnership of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and

NEL Power. Start up is scheduled

for 2007.

Mexico

• Altamira V Power Plant.

Iberdrola of Spain is planning construction of a $570 million

1180 MWe combined cycle gas-fired power plant at Altamira near Tamaulipas in the northern region. Start up is scheduled for November 2006. ICA Fluor (jointly owned by Fluor Corporation and Empresas ICA Sociedad Controladora of Mexico City) has been awarded a 36-month lump sum turnkey EPC contract that includes start-up services.

Namibia

• Oranjemund combined cycle power plant

Namibia Power Corporation and the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia are undertaking a feasibility study into the possible construction of a $950 million combined cycle gas turbine power plant rated at between 800 MWe and 1600 MWe. The plant will be located at Oranjemund, approximately 800 km from Windhoek and will use gas from the Kudu gas fields. Surplus power will be sold to South Africa.

Start up of the plant is scheduled for 2007. Ernst & Young have been appointed as financial advisors.

UAE

• Ajman Power and Desalination plant

The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA) of the UAE is planning a $650 million 900 MWe and 30 mgpd power and desalination plant to be located near the existing Al-Zawra desalination plant. Tender packages for the power plant and gas turbines are expected to be released in July. Start up is scheduled in 2007.

UAE

Areva’s Transmission and Distribution Division has won a r70 million contract from the United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Electricity and Water for the design and installation of a new high-voltage substation located in Dhaid.

Under the scope of the agreement, Areva will build and install a new 400/220 kV substation, comprising ten 400 kV and ten 220 kV gas-insulated switchgear bays and two 500 MVA power transformers. Equipment and services supplied will also include digital control systems, protection and control equipment and civil works.

UK

• Pitsea Landfill Energy-from-Waste power plant

Cleanaway Ltd is planning a £12 million landfill gas power plant, to be located at Pitsea Landfill site near Basildon, Essex. The initial plant ouput will be 8 MW with an option to increase it to 14MW depending on gas availability. Start up is scheduled for 2006.

This is a turnkey project, comprising design, procurement, installation, commissioning and O&M including building and civil works.

UK

• Biofuel power plant

United Utilities Green Energy is planning a £21 million 15 MW bio-fuel power plant using fluidised bed technology, with start up scheduled for 2006. The plant will be located in south Wales. The project is at the contractor prequalification stage.

The scope covers an EPCC contract together with a possible ten-year O&M contract. A two-year operational trial period is also envisaged.

USA

• Fox Energy Centre

CalPine is constructing a $250 million 235 MW gas-fired combined cycle power plant at the Fox Energy Centre at Kaukauna, Wisconsin. The plant is scheduled to start up in June 2005.

USA

• North Bend cogeneration unit

The Columbian Chemicals Company is developing a 45 MW cogeneration plant in Centerville, Louisiana. The unit is scheduled to start up in the second half of 2005.

Primary Energy is the developer and will perform the front-end engineering. The engineering and construction contract has been awarded to Zachry Construction Company, which is in the early stages of detailed engineering. The bidding process should begin in June 2004 for specialty contractors with construction due to start by September 2004.

• Port Westward power plant

Portland General Electric company is planning to build a 400 MW combined cycle power plant at Port Westward in Columbia County, Oregon. PGE expects to select EPC contractor in the second half of 2004, and construction is due to start by the end of 2004. Start up is scheduled for the end of 2006.

• Lake Side combined cycle gas turbine power plant

ScottishPower’s subsidiary PacifiCorp has approved the development and construction of a $330 million 534 MW gas-fired combined cycle power plant in Salt Lake City, Utah. PacifiCorp intends to enter into an asset purchase and sale agreement with Summit Vineyard, to develop the plant, and with Siemens Westinghouse to construct it. Start up is scheduled for the second half of 2007.

• Longview power plant

Genpower is seeking government approval for a $940 million 600 MW coal-fired supercritical power plant, to be located in Monongalia County, West Virginia. One supercritical pulverised coal boiler and one steam turbine will be used in the plant. Start up is scheduled for 2008. Construction is expected to start in late 2004 or early 2005.

Environmental groups are challenging an air permit issued by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. Hearings on the air permit appeal are scheduled for June and July.

USA

Alstom has won a r40 million contract from AmerenUE, previously known as Union Electric Company, to upgrade the steam turbines at the 1234 MWe Callaway nuclear power plant in Missouri, USA.

The contract consists of the retrofit of the GE steam turbine, comprising one HP turbine and three LP turbines. Alstom will design, engineer, manufacture and project manage all activities through delivery and installation. Installation of the new equipment will take place in 2005. The upgrade is to increase both the total output of the plant and the efficiency of the plant, as well as reducing maintenance requirements.

Yemen

• Marib power plant phase 2

The Public Electricity Corporation of Yemen is planning a $280 million 400 MW Phase 2 extension at Marib power plant. International consultants have been asked to submit bids for the tendering stage of the project. The plant is likely to be an IPP. Start up is scheduled for 2007.

Chesf is waiting for the bidding process for a new $380 million 960 km 500kV transmission line (Colinas/Sao Joao do Piaui/Sobradinho) expected to start in October 2004.
