Out of the nine 4000 MW Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPPs) planned in India, the bidding process in respect of two projects, located in Mundra in Gujarat and Sasan in Madhra Pradesh, has been completed, the government reports.
In addition, the bidding process for two more projects, to be located in Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Tilaiya in Jharkhand, has been initiated. However, final clearances from the state governments are awaited for the remaining five projects in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and Chattisgarh.
The UMPPs are being developed on a Build, Own & Operate basis through tariff-based competitive bidding.
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) in consultation with the state governments had identified nine sites, four at pithead and five at coastal locations for development of UMPPs. The other sites are: Cheyyur in Tamil Nadu, Sundergarh in Orissa, Tadri in Karnataka, Akaltara in Chhatisgarh and Girye in Maharashtra.
