Upgrade of major CHP plant commissioned

2 June 2003

The upgrade of Al Taweelah A1 combined power and desalination plant in Abu Dhabi, UAE, has been commissioned on schedule and on budget, say ADWEA (Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority), the majority shareholder. Contractors TotalFinaElf and Tractabel own the remaining 40 per cent.

With a power capacity of 1430 MW and a seawater desalination cpability of 77 million gallons per day, Al Taweelah A1 is one of the largest gas fired cogeneration plants in the world. It will meet around a quarter of Abu Dhabi's power and water demand.

The project is an important reference for TotalFinaElf, who took on a contract requiring an uprade extension that would halve CO2 emissions and reduce by 90 per cent NOx emissions compared to the original plant.
