US hits record demand

3 August 2005

High temperature and humidity levels have seen US generators set a new weekly demand record at 95,259 GWh, according to the Edison Electric Institute.

The previous record of 90,468 GWh was set in August 2002. Daily demand records have also been set in Atlanta, Cincinnati, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles with New York pulling more than 32 GW.

Rising demand is also pushing up prices with peak prices in California hitting the $250/MWh price cap.
