Verbund to build 480 MW pumped storage facility

22 February 2005

Plans to add a pump storage facility at its 505 MW Kaprun power plant will almost double capacity of the plant to 985 MW for Verbund, Austria's largest utility. Work on the new 480 MW plant, is set to begin in 2006 at a cost of some € 365 million. The so-called Limberg II development is expected to be completed in 2011.

The rapidly expanding contribution from renewable generation is increasing the demand for a system capable of ironing out short-term grid fluctuations.
