Vestas to close European plants

28 October 2010

Continuing weak demand in Europe for wind turbine products has forced Vestas to announce the closure of several factories in Scandinavia.

The Danish wind turbine manufacturer said in third quarter report that its expectations for an increase in demand in 2010 and 2011 had not materialised, and that it was “compelled to adjust its capacity in Europe”. Around 3000 jobs are likely to be lost.

Vestas is to close four plants in Denmark, where costs are highest, and one in Sweden. A number of administrative functions in Denmark and elsewhere are also likely to be adjusted.

It says that market uncertainty and competition are expected to remain high in 2011.
