A consortium led by Innowind has placed an order with Vestas for wind turbines for three new projects in South Africa.
The three power plants will together add 105 MW of capacity to the South African grid and contribute to the country's ambitious renewable energy goals.
Vestas will provide 35 of its V112-3.0 MW wind turbines and will build the three wind farms on a turnkey basis. Turbine delivery will start in mid-2014 and turbine commissioning is expected to start in the third quarter of 2014, according to Vestas.
The order is the largest received by Vestas in South Africa. "These projects mark another important step in further developing this promising wind market," says Thomas Richterich, President of Vestas Central Europe. "We are happy to be chosen as the turbine supplier and service provider for these wind power plants and to consolidate our market leadership in South Africa."
The three projects - Chaba, Waainek and Grassridge - will be located in Eastern Cape province and will produce a combined 375 GWh per year.
Innowind's co-investors in the project are the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and local communities.
