The first 600 MW unit of the six unit plant with a total capacity of 2,400 - 3,600 MW, is expected to begin commercial operations in 2010.
Meanwhile, Japan’s Electric Power Development Company, also known as J-Power, is reportedly considering investing in a separate1,200 MW coal-fired plant in Vietnam and has just launched a feasibility study on the project.
EVN has also announced plans to invest some VND 3.1 trillion ($194.7 million) building 37 small hydro stations in its northern provinces which border China.
Between 10 and 13 stations will be built by 2010 in Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Ha Giang and Lang Son provinces, each with a maximum capacity of 5 MW.
EVN is also proposing to develop a 500 kV transformer station costing VND 991 billion ($61.94 million) in the northern Son La province that will link the country's largest hydropower plant, due to have a capacity of 2,400 MW in 2010, to the national grid.
