Vietnam's government has reached a preliminary agreement with Malaysian firm Janakuasa on the construction of a 1200 MW coal-fired power plant at the Duyen Hai power plant complex in Duyen Hai district, Tra Vinh province.
The proposed 2 x 600 MW plant would be constructed on a build-operate transfer basis and would also be Vietnam's first such facility to use imported coal, according to the country's industry and trade ministry.
The power plant has been under development since 2009 and construction was due to start in late 2010. The project still requires an investment licence and could cost around $2.2 billion to build, according to a report in the state-run Dau Tu newspaper.
