Phu Cuong Group (PCG) has started investigating the feasibility of constructing up to 800 MW of offshore wind energy capacity off the coast of southern Vietnam.

PCG has signed up DNV GL to deliver a feasibility study on a proposed near-offshore wind farm with a capacity of 170 MW.

The proposed wind farm would be the first in PCG's proposed 800 MW pipeline and the first offshore wind farm in Vietnam. It would help Vietnam to reach its target of developing 800 MW of installed wind energy capacity by 2020.

DNV GL's feasibility study will be delivered with the help of a grant from the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). It will assess the potential for wind production, review permitting and land control issues, evaluate the needs for a safe, reliable and affordable grid connection, provide a foundational design, estimate potential construction costs and recommend the optimal approach to financing it.

PCG, a Vietnamese real estate and export firm, has proposed the construction of 800 MW of near-offshore wind capacity in the Mekong Delta off the cost of Vietnam's Soc Trang province. Construction of the first phase - consisting of the 170 MW Phu Cuong 1 wind farm - is due to start in 2017.
